Our little 6.5 months monster just got her spayed yesterday. She was a bit frozen for a while, and had a good sleep last night. Today her eating is almost back to normal, eating all kinds of stuff but we are finding very hard to keep her "calm", as being beagle. We put her in her cage finally, but having the plastic collar and being inside cage she is not handling well. I'm giving her mini walks at home, but her grip is so strong, quite difficult to handle.
She peed several times since the surgery but did not have a poo yet, which I heard might be normal?
Anaesthetic can make them a bit constipated so don’t worry too much about that.
You’ll never be able to tire her out physically with short walks round the house, so get her using her brain instead. It’ll mentally tire her out and she’ll be much more calm and relaxed.
A stuffed kong in her crate (you can take the cone/collar off as long as you’re watching her and making sure she’s not nibbling at her wound)
An old cardboard box stuffed with old towels, empty toilet roll tubes, scrunched up paper etc etc and a few pieces of kibble or treats hidden inside for her to find. Being a beagle, she’ll absolutely love using her nose to find things and it’ll be really satisfying for her too. And she’ll probably enjoy shredding the cardboard and paper too.
Short training sessions. Nothing too energetic at the minute of course, but there’s plenty of static training you can do to get her using her brain. We did a lot of clicker training and target training when Phoebe was spayed. I put a small “X” on the floor made out of electrical tape (or you can use a coaster) and trained her to put her paw on it on cue. Hand touches are another good static exercise. Getting her to touch her nose against your hand, then gradually extending the length of the touch.
Phoebe had no pain at all after her spay, but I know some dogs can be a bit sore and uncomfortable. Was she prescribed any pain meds to be given at home?
Could it be that she’s just feeling disorientated wearing the cone?
Yes, she has been given a daily tablet to take every morning. I think it is pain medication post-surgery. Her walking much better today, and we got one of those inflatable collars much comfortable than the plastic cone! she seems more relax today, lets see!
