Not sure how there's a shortage, everyone seems to have had accidental matings during the lock down. You know, while you're home, all day, to watch your dogs.... In a home with no working doors apparently....

I think most responsible breeders weren't breeding during lockdown, people wanted pups/kittens, so yes, the ''accidental matings'' (of which PF is full) seemed to increase. Moggie kittens are going for hundreds on Gumtree. I imagine pups are too, but what their future holds is anyone's guess, poor things.

It's not a shortage of puppies, but an increase in people wanting animals on a whim.

Sometime in the near future there will be a ton of adolescent dogs in rescues looking for homes.

Nope, they're going for thousands, especially if they have poodle in them.

Surely at that cost you would do a little bit of research. Getting a dog because of extra time on hands due to lockdown is crazy. The world has gone mad.

In my experience people do more research on their next fridge or holiday destination than they do on bringing a pet into their home, hence why rescues are always so busy :(

    I

It’s just crazy I can’t get my head around it. The thing is rescues are not going to have the money or resources to deal with the fall out from this. So sad.

This is very true, although I know of a lot of rescues who have been flooded with people wanting to adopt as well, although they mostly want puppies or fashionable breeds & mixes:rolleyes:
I doubt whether they are any more committed than the puppy buyers, many seem to just want a 'bargain' while prices are through the roof.

I know, I just cannot imagine how terrified and hot that kitten must have been.

dont forget, these are now the parents, that, as children, got a medal just for taking part
because they couldnt have one child be rewarded for being better at, anything, than another
they never heard the words no, bad luck, better luck next time,
or had the utter heartbreak of being denied something they really wanted
( weve all been there, mine was a hamster from brick lane market, back in the mid 60s, my brother was deathly afraid of all things small and furry, im sure my wails, when told sorry but no, couldve brought the market to a stop)
and so dont know how to deny their little darlings anything, because theyve no experience other than being entitled

I'm feeling very frustrated about this situation. I took some time to think about what I wanted after losing my last dog in October last year. I thought about my situation and what breed would suit my current and potential future circumstances. I put my name on a waiting list with a KC breeder. Unfortunately she lost puppies and the bitch had to have an emergency Csection.Another KC assured breeder I approached decided to add 1K to her price.
I've looked at rescues but it's near enough impossible to find a cat,dog and child friendly dog in rescue. Those that are are snapped up by others before I've got a chance to apply. I'm now on two other waiting lists with the earliest looking like December. I hadn't planned to get a puppy in the winter months as socialisation and house training is more challenging. I live alone so the pressure and responsibility will fall on my shoulders only.

I can afford to pay these inflated prices but won't on principle.

Yes rescues are going to be inundated at some point. But these teenagers will be under socialised, with challenging behavioural issues which, quite frankly, I have no wish to spend my time and money addressing. I want dog ownership to be the pleasure it has been for the past twenty odd years, not a struggle to deal with issues.
We call ourselves a nation of animal lovers but all I see is greed and stupidity. The ones who will truly suffer are the animals themselves unfortunately.

I feel so bad for the people who have been planning to get a puppy for ages (ie, since before lockdown). There must be so many people out there who suddenly can’t find a puppy or can’t afford the silly prices.

We started looking for a puppy in January and went on a waiting list in February when the mum was one week pregnant. We picked up our puppy in May. If we had left it any longer we just wouldn’t have been able to get one.

I agree, there will be so many puppies ending up in rescues when people go back to work. I just can’t imagine why people think it’s a good idea to suddenly decide to get a puppy just because they are off work for a few months and it’s so awful that the breeders are doubling their prices.

The breeder of our puppy has had to remove all her contact details from the internet as they were getting over 10 phone calls a day.

Saw something similar in [email protected]; family walking round, kid (aged six or seven) holding a terribly small kitten. There were people in the shop with dogs; kitten too tiny even for a harness (which, still idiotic, would have been better than nothing).

I'm no expert, but that doesn't look like a Shih Tzu X to me . . . ? But I bet it has a posh fancy name.

I feel your pain. My husband is retired and I'm a partially retired key worker. We started looking for a puppy beginning of year. After a few disappointments I managed to get on a waiting list. Puppies born end of May and we were offered a boy. Got photos and videos. Spoke to breeder over phone, happy it was genuine. Then got text yesterday saying some of the puppies had been withdrawn from sale as they had fallen ill. So we are back to square one again. Can't see us getting a puppy now as prices have doubled. I've not been on lockdown and have carried on working through out this awful pandemic. We and our 20yrs twin boys are devastated. Hope you will find a puppy soon. Fingers crossed. :)
