how can i tell if gerbil is hibernating?

we have a gerbil that is 'out of it' quite definitely breathing but sleeping 24/7

    what to do?

    why is he doing it?

is it something to worry about?

Gerbils rarely hibernate in captivity. They sometimes do so due to drop in temp. You could try warming him/her up in a towel by a radiator etc. There is also the difference in touch, rock hard is normally a sign of death, if there is some movement in limbs on slight pressure then signs are good.

no but his mate did this and we woke him up . He was ok after that. I am going to place him on a hot water bottle to see if he improves.
