Hi, sorry if this has been asked before but... My new puppy comes home next weekend at 8 weeks old. I want to start training and socialising him as soon as i can but to be honest although i have been around dogs my whole life i have never had my own puppy and therefore no idea where to start with training. I've bought a couple of puppy books but to be honest they weren't that helpful.

I have 2 weeks off a week after my puppy comes home and wanted to make a start but im not sure how i can do this carrying my dog everywhere as the vet has said he needs his 1st jab then 2 weeks till his 2nd jab then another week till i can take him out. I have no dogs that are vaccinated that i can introduce him to as my mum is getting a puppy at the same time (different litter) and that wont be vaccinated either. Any suggestions?

regarding the socialising of the puppy....follow your vets advice regarding when to start. then...if you have no dogs to socialise him with ask your vet if either puppy classes are run at the surgery or if he can recommend a trainer who does them. i cannot stress enough the importance of young puppies socialising with other dogs. dogs teach each other far more than us humans ever can and it really does make a difference if they miss out on this at an early age.

as for good books to read try What is my dog thinking and also 7 Steps to the perfect puppy by Gwen Bailey. these are very easy to read, lots of pictures explaining the correct signals and body language to give your puppy and readily available at most libraries or on Amazon.com

i have an 8 week old collie, who is bouncing off the walls to get out.

as for training i had looked at clicker training and seen it worked for everyone. which i was dubious about. however in 3 days my dog can fetch, drop a ball and sit. very very proud of him
