Last week I got a copy of a book of dog photographs by Elliot Erwitt at a charity stall. I noticed one of the dogs wearing a prong collar in a photo taken in France in 1965, in France in 1970 (worn prongside out) and another in the USA in 1974. I had imagined them to be a more recent invention from America. Does anyone know how far back in history they go, and are they actually from Europe?

I believe they originate from Germany, although not sure about when exactly.

The choke chain dates back to Egyptian times.
