hi, i am worried about a new little hen hahns macaw that i have had for a couple of months
handreared, talkative, bit nippy is how i would normally describe her, in the space of a few days, [after a quite heavy moult] she has become very very clingy, stopped bitting, not eating quite as much, no so vocal, droppings are normal, drinking ok, all she wants to do is sit tucked into my neck, feathers puffed

i am not sure if its because of her moult or breeding season or is she ill, all my other birds are fine

    your thoughts please

At 3yrs old she should be getting ready for breeding so that is probably the reason for the change in her behaviour.

aw do you think that could be it, i am close to tears here, been trying to get a avian vet, but been told its a 7 day wait for appiontment

i do have a cock bird - she hates him, he lost his mate last year so got her as a companion, but she wont even go near his cage

If you think she is ill 7 days is too long to wait to see a vet, birds go down very fast. Where abouts are you?

in hartlepool, my own vet [ non avain by own admission ] said if she is no better on monday he will give her antibiotics

but her droppings and everything is fine, its just this big change in her, she is normally a little green monster, she is all lovey and wants to be hand fed

The nearest avian vet I know of is in Harrogate about 60 miles from you. Have you bred any parrots before, do you know courtship behaviour?

When you say she wants to be hand fed, what is she doing?

If she is running around bobbing her head up and down, lifting her tail and possibly getting a bit aggressive to other people I would put it down to her wanting to breed.
