I don't know the exact no. But I'm afraid far less than 47,596 :(

Thats one of the Dogs Trust surveys so i looked it up - those are the 2014 figures (pre compulsory microchip). The link to the most recent survey (2017 https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/news-events/news/stray dogs report_v4.pdf) shows that there has been a year on year improvement since the records began with 60% now being returned to owners (some of these dogs are lost/picked up by dog warden as well as abandoned). There is also regional variation.

Hopefully (well, I want to be optimistic) the new regulations in regard to breeding (Oct 2018) and registration will further reduce those figures as many of the dogs abandoned are bought cheaply online from back yard breeders, without thought to their future. Easy come, easy go. :(

Shocking figures. Looking at the bigger picture though, it seemed obvious to me that with increasing numbers of people being pushed into poverty by austerity it would have knock on effect with their pets. Many people can no longer afford to keep them. I just hope more people will rescue rather than buying a puppy.

Poor dogs :(. Its good the figures have come down since microchipping was made law (although I've said loads of times that law could be even better if scanners were compulsory too) but obviously it would be good if they came down further.

That is a ridiculous figure. It's roughly 1 every 11 minutes. "Nation of dog lovers" might need a rethink.

I'm sure the figures are coming down though we used to put the figures on the website and sure used to be nearly 100k 8 or so years ago.

Still alot of dogs though.. I'm wondering how many were chipped or chip details out of date

Council Pound is very much a UK term? Every council will have a kennels that they use as the pound ?

I think it's very presumptive to say the dogs were left 'heartlessly'. You can't know what the people whose dogs they were, were feeling. The Dog's Trust survey showed that many microchipped dogs couldn't be reunited with their owners because contact details hadn't been updated - those dogs' owners may well have been distraught.
