NEW YORK -- Long-time animal lover Oprah Winfrey is now partnering up with one of the most influential rescues in the country, PAWS Chicago.

The state-of-the-art shelter has already led the way for shelters across the country, dedicated to making Chicago the first no-kill city. The Oprah Store is doing their part to save more homeless pets by donating an “O” leash, collar and bowl to every dog adopted out of Sophie’s Room at the PAWS Chicago Adoption and Humane Center.

After visiting the shelter for a segment she did on puppy mills in April of 2008, Winfrey dedicated "Sophie's Room" to her beloved Cocker Spaniel who passed away in March of last year. The Angels with Tails West Loop Adoption Event marks the first event for the pair which takes place this Sunday, July 26. While the partnership seeks to improve the lives of animals both PAWS Chicago and Winfrey have been advocating for dogs and cats for years now.

PAWS Chicago is one of the foremost shelters, reducing the amount of euthanized animals by over 50 percent since their founding in 1997. O Magazine has done several articles and promotional events encouraging the adoption of unwanted animals -- particularly from a local no-kill shelter, like PAWS Chicago.

When The Oprah Winfrey Show committed an episode to shedding light on the devastating world of puppy mills, the response spread to news outlets nationwide. With Winfrey’s possible reach and impact on millions of viewers, this was a very important step in educating people on responsible pet ownership.

Featuring several PAWS adoptable pets on her Web site each week, Winfrey even held a photo shoot at the PAWS facility where she fell in love with the newest addition to her family -- a cream colored pup named Sadie.

With the Oprah Store as the anchor store, The Angels with Tails event this Sunday will feature dogs, cats, kittens and puppies available at several participating stores throughout the area. From 12 to 4 p.m. the event will be held for browsing adorably furry merchandise while checking out the local shops.
