I have a cat she's about 17 lately I have noticed her fur tangled up
Stuck together around the sides of her stomach anyone know
What causes this and could it be painful for her ?

It's caused by her or you not grooming her enough. As she is old she is probably forgetting or unable to groom herself properly you will need to brush her regularly (2 or 3 times a week) to stop her matting (tangled up). Yes, it is uncomfortable as it pulls on the skin and in an old cat the skin can tear. It can also cause sores.

FInd a brush and gently try to ease the matts out. Do not use scissors to cut them out as it is very easy to cut the skin. If you can't get them out it is probably better for you to either take her to the vets or a grooming parlour to let them do it.
