I would ask your own vet. As microchipping is a legal requirement, I doubt it can be ignored except on vet’s advice. I would also ask her for her vet’s opinion in writing. A quick Google found advice from the AKC that dogs should not be vaccinated under 0.9kg.

I would also question whether a dog is mature enough to leave it’s dam at less than a kilo. How old will it be?

In Scotland, a vet can advise against it if they think the puppy is ”too small” although that seems quite a subjective decision. I'm not sure it is the same in England so it might depend on where the puppy is.

That said, I'm pretty sure small animals like guinea pigs can be chipped (@tabelmabel ?) so I don't know how valid the size argument is

Mine was not much over 1kg when he had his 1st vaccination and microchip, the vet asked if I wanted to wait for the chip as he was so small but I went ahead. He is 7 months now and no problems.

Oh i have no idea about chipping guinea pigs! There should be no need as ALL guinea pigs should be living indoors with other pigs and people. They are sociable animals and need lots of attention and company of their own kind.

Just thought id take this opportunity to get that in - thanks @JoanneF :)

@JoanneF Rabbits, possibly? I have two rescue buns and they are both chipped! One was young when we got him and he was chipped by the rescue, would certainly have been under 1kg.

Can I ask just out of interest what is a Morkie? Is it a typo and it's a Yorkie or is it a Yorkie crossed with something? Just intrigued as not heard of it before.

My ferrets were chipped by the rescue, one was tiny around 350g.
I would definitely ask your vets opinion but I would think they'd be fine to be chipped and if not should be kept longer as the chip should be registered to the breeder first (my understanding anyway).

I can’t see a problem with micro chipping a small dog like that, my tortoise is microchipped (it’s a requirement with certain breeds of tortoise) although the chip is put in the top of the leg rather than the neck

Microchips are tiny now. I can't imagine there would be an issue microchipping a pup under 1kg to be honest as smaller animals are chipped. Sounds like the breeder might be trying to get out of paying for chipping the litter. Unless the vet thinks that it would be a health issue they should be chipped, and if not you will need a vet's letter to say why.

That was my first thought, though if you look around it's often easy to find a vet doing it for free in normal times.
