    Meet Kreebo :)

    IMG_20190119_123433.jpg

I mentioned in Charlie-girl's vet thread I'd been asked to go check on a cat by some friends, and this is he :)

It’s a bit of a complex situation; the cat belonged to a lady who used to work at my company, and she sadly passed away from cancer a few years ago. She was the organiser of the home, as her husband suffered a brain injury in an accident, which is why my friends now help out.

He'd called them because his daughter was worried Kreebo had a rotten tooth and was in pain, and he couldn't get hold of a vet, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Well, he's a lovely chap, let me check his mouth and everything. 11 years old, rather underweight, and his teeth definitely need a clean (I suspect the daughter mistook heavy plaque buildup for rottenness), but he's active, not in pain and eating OK. He's booked into the vet for Tuesday for jabs and a checkup, and I'm going to sort some better food so he can get back to a good weight :)

    Aw, thanks everyone :)

I should clarify, I'm not taking him in myself (Charlie-girl has enough to cope with on the form of Lorelei, she'd probably pack her bags if I brought another home!), but I'm going to get him to the vets and help them to look after him better. :) With written instructions and better food they should be fine.

I know, I know - but it's the only one I have at the moment!

I have to be a bit careful, as I said it's a complicated and social services scenario, so confidentiality is rather more serious than would normally be the case here :) But I think a few more photos will be fine - I'll try and get some today.

I've been to Pets at Home and picked up a load of Butchers Classic grain free food - not the best of the best, I know, but better and cheaper that Felix (they have a very limited budget, as you can imagine), and they'll be able to cope with giving him a can a day over three meals as it's easy to remember. I've got the carrier in the car for the vet trip tonight, just hoping they remember to keep him in today! Hopefully they won't discover anything majorly wrong with him, they don't have much money to spare. A routine dental would be OK, I think, but much more than that might be a problem...

First of all, I need to apologise - due to circumstances beyond my control I didn't have time to get any more photos last night... :( I wanted some too, but thanks to heavy snow flurries in the afternoon traffic was awful, then there was the challenge of finding Kreebo amongst the general chaos of two bedrooms and a study. Thankfully I'd already warned the vets we were likely to be late when I saw the state of the traffic... As it happens, it worked out well, as they had an emergency in so we'd have had to wait anyway. And as soon as we got home and let him out, he trotted off to find some privacy...

The good news is, he has no rotten teeth, just very heavy plaque build up and a touch of gum disease. He's also definitely been de-pompommed, and he had his booster jabs. On the less good side, he's significantly underweight (which we knew already) at only about 2.5kg, had quite a large faeces buildup (so the vet was a bit concerned about constipation), and also has a very high heart rate and a grade 3 heart murmur.

Ideally they'd like him to see a specialist cardiologist, but that would be out of reach financially. Which means giving him an anaesthetic for a routine dental (which would be affordable on it's own) would carry extra risk, but I'm not sure there is any other option at this point.

Does anyone know how well the cat toothpastes/gels work, and if they'd be effective at getting rid of large lumps of plaque at the base of teeth? The vet mentioned them, and I met the daughter for the first time yesterday and she asked about them too, I'm just not sure if they'd be enough. I also have to try and impress on them to remember to do it every day, as I live several miles away so it's not like I could just pop round and do it. @Ceiling Kitty ?

Oh bless you for your kindness @Jesthar - I'm glad Kreebo has you looking out for him now. There must be so many cats in the world, where their owners can't cope any longer but don't have a Jesthar to look out for them. I'm glad Kreebo does. I hope you can get things sorted for him, do they have a PDSA vet near them, don't they help financially with bigger things that need doing?

Unfortunately I have some sad news - Kreebo quietly passed away at the weekend.

He'd not been eating as well for a few days, and had been getting a bit unsteady on his legs at times. I was going to take him back to the vet this week, but on Saturday they found him curled up in his forever sleep in a favourite spot in the garden.

It could have been age (due to the lack of paperwork we're not entirely certain how old he was, probably early teens), but my instinct is he was rather more unwell than it seemed on the surface - possibly cancer or similar.

He's going to be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered at a special spot in accordance with the wishes of the wife before she passed away.
