new harness - unsafe?

So eventually I went with an ancon
harness as I grew more and more concerned for Oliver's little neck, and perfect fit don't have any in stock the size he would need. :(

I am quite concerned, if I didn't know better I would think I had put it on the wrong way round. The neck part is non adjustable, and I can pretty much get my whole hand down between his neck and the harness.

I tried putting his leg through as though he were trying to escape, and it was tricky. I don't think he would try it, but still.. bit worried. He had it on atm, and he's gone to sleep so seems comfy in it. What do you think?

You dont want it over tight, I can get a hand flat in between Dexters - but his is a very different style. Most harnesses with a bit of effort ( if a dog really really really wants to, or is practised at it) can be gotten out of, just like collars. Personally i would rather see the position of the lead ring at the back of the harness (unless it moves) otherwise surely this is just going to be pulling on the mesh bit which is round his neck like a collar anyway?

OMG, did I miss the Oliver intro thread? He's so cute!!!

Sorry :Shy
I always looking out for new harnesses, Muttly has 2, but the Julius K9 he can back out of pretty easy and the other, well it's ok for summer but he doesn't like stepping into it
much.
You can buy a Y belt for the Julius K9 Harness which should prevent Muttly from backing out of it. It connects the chest strap to the strap which goes around the tummy and is quite simple to fit. I've bought one for both Gwylim and Georgina, not because they back out of theirs, but because I think having the extra strap makes them safer travelling i the car. I bought mine from Julius K9 Hungary for around ÂŁ5 each but I think they're more expensive in the UK. Take a look and see what you think!

Personally that looks too big. Also with the placement of the attachment point it will be easy to back out/wriggle out off.
We've tried a lot of harness (honestly lost count!) and the best I've found for my jrts is Indi-Dog's Houdini Harness. Made to measure and great durability.

If Perfect Fit are going to be getting the size you need back in stock I'd wait for that personally. Nothing pulls up into the throat with that one. I have the Julius K9 too and mostly like it but there are a few design issues with it imo. One being how much of the back it covers, another being that apparently the strap going across the front legs as it does can actually impede proper movement.

I have a harness very similar for my chi who's microscopic at only 2kg and she can't get out of it despite it also being quite loose around the neck. You don't want any pressure on their neck anyway. I swear I've tried every harness available for my chi as she's not only difficult to fit but also very fussy and that's the best one I've tried. It's not perfect and I'm not a huge fan of the design but she walks comfortably in it which is more than I can say for most of the others I've tried. Maybe persevere with it and see how he gets on. For my other dogs who are also very small I have buddy belts and I can 100% recommend them. They are pretty much impossible to wriggle out of, very comfy for them and go absolutely nowhere near the neck as they sit up on the shoulders instead. Kinda pricy but worth it IMO especially for small dogs. Plus they have a really good range of sizes.

Hectors was a bit baggy like that but to be far he never tried to escaped, he pulled forward but never backwards and I only walked him places that if he escaped wouldn't have been that dangerous, but we walked around the garden lots to start off with, could you possible make a loose loop that you put though the d ring on his collar and clip to the d ring on the harness so if the harness does pop over his head then it is still attached to collar so you don't lose him completely.

This is what Hectors looked like, and I think I could well have gotten my hand under it like your picture.
