My sister has a rhodesian ridgeback male, who she got a 6mths old, he had been very abused and has left him with issues. He is extremely nervous of people esp men and will display the behaviours you mention. She tells people who visit to ignore him as he stands and barks at them and act like he is not in the room, eventually goes up and will sniff and then initiate contact, it's on his terms, then he is given treats by the person and everything is fine after that. Even though he is now 10yrs he still displays this behaviuor but it's perfectly managable with the above way. the tabard is a great idea too. I'm sure with work on your part he'll come thru
