    Hi everyone,

I need a little advice about two different breeds I have been hesitating between.

    Belgium Malinois
    or
    Dutch Shepherd

I have been wanting a new dog for a couple of years and now that I have a stable job and house with enough space outside to walk I have been searching for a new companion.
I already have two cats who have been in contact with dogs since a young age but have never lived with one.

I have read so many different pros and cons for both dogs.... any advice or suggestions would be welcome !

    Thanks :)

I don’t think either breed is ideal as a first dog tbh

Others will be able to give more detail/guidance ;)

Neither is suitable for a first time owner. At all.

What attracted you to these dogs?

I have had two other dogs when I was younger (beagle and a bichon frisé). I am especially attracted to this breed because I am someone who is always on the move and my closest friend has a GSP which we often walk together.
I have also already looked up a few trainers in my town to help me learn how to correctly train any breed I would get.

I don’t think that either a Beagle or a Bichon Frise will have given you any insight into the temperament or needs of a Malinois (don’t know anything about Dutch Shepherds).

Very ‘driven’ dogs with a very strong guarding instinct and a need to work at something.

There’s a very good reason that they are often used for Schutzhund, or as personal protection dogs.

I would have said not a beginner dog.

If you like the Belgian Shepherds, then look at a Groenendael.

A Malinois is a very challenging dog and could be overwhelming for a first time owner.
