My "male" hamster seems to think he's pregnant...

I say "male" as i'm almost certain that Leo is a boy...

The thing is... he's built two nests!

"He's" pulled out some of "his" fur and made one nest in the corner of the cage and the other in a cardboard box toy...

"He's" moved out of "his" little ham house and into the box...

As i said.. he's built the nest with bedding, chippings and his own fur.... :eek:hmy:

He's the ham i got from the RSPCA...

They said he's a boy and i just took their word for it.. I haven't actually flipped him upside down to check for myself...

The last time one of my hamsters made a nest like this, she had 9 babies!!! :eek:hmy:

Shall i flip "him" over and see when "he" wakes up?...

I would. Atleast you could be prepared for babies if he turns out to be a she.

Hmmm I had the same problem with my male hamster Spike, He only had 4 babies though, but the pet shop assured me he was a boy:rolleyes:. Has Leo been with any other male hamsters in the last 16 days?

Sounds like it's a female to me. And possibly a pregant one. You really should find out for sure, I'd say.

That means it could be possible your hammie is in fact a she.
And possibly been in contact with other males.

Does he/she look bigger round the waist at all?
Though if she was to have a small litter [if she is pregnant] you probably wouldn't be able to tell.
My hamsters have had, 7, 9 and 10 in a litter, so were quite big and could obviously tell they were pregnant.

    I cannot tell really...
He's definately put on weight but he was really skinny when i got him...

My second ham i bought (Penny) had 9 babies, 6 days after we brought her home..

I didnt even know she was pregnant, i just thought she was fat, like my first hamster, Gizmo was :D

I had to hand feed them not long after two weeks as she went loopy and started to attack them..
Sadly one of the babies died :(

Spike didn't look any bigger till two days before she had them then she suddenly looked bigger, and didn't make a nest till a couple of days before either. She is a dwarf though so I don't know if that is the same with Syrians.

    Ahh ok fair enough.
Aww poor baby :( Fortunately I haven't had to do that, I bet it was horrible :(

I think you need to check the gender then.

I bought a hamster a few weeks ago and she was supposed to be a male, but I could tell she was female because she didn't have a larger rounder back end.

    Keep us updated :)

    I dont know his age....

He is fully grown though but i haven't seen underneath him as he doesnt climb up the bars like the others...

I haven't tipped him up either as i just asumed that the RSPCA would be right about the sex..

As he is quite fluffy on his bum, i cant say it sticks out where his balls are (or should be)
He never sits still long enough to check anyway..

He has been acting funny the past couple of days though... not wanting to come out of his cage and play and not eating as much...

I just thought is was to do with the heat!

Well if Leo is a she and has babies good luck!! :)
Although it's not the case of all hamsters, but I had one that was very very sleepy, like even more than usual when she was pregnant, but then my other hamster was still very active and even wanted to be held quite near to the birth.

His cage is due for a clean today...
I dont want to disturb his nest though...

Shall i still clean it out? I know i wont be able to clean it for a couple of weeks if he has babies...

I can leave one of the nests (theone in the box) in tact but the other (in his wee corner btw  ) will go if i clean him out...

It's such a long time since i had ham babies....

Well I'd say you should clean the cage out, but keep the nest in the box.
Either way, he might make a new one if you clean him out anyway.
My hamster always slept in like a house, so when she was pregnant we cleaned her out a couple of days before she was due and she just made it again.
But to be on the safe side you could keep the one in the box.

I would listen for squeaking before you take the nest out just in case, with Spike I went to give her a cuddle and heard squeaking coming from the nest but I didn't see any babies for two weeks. the cages smell bad after three weeks so a good clean at least of the wee corner would be a good idea now while you still can.

If he is a boy you might have to have the birds and the bees talk with him.
