I have a 11 year old chocolate lab who’s recently come back from the vets with liver problems, he’s refusing to eat any of his food, which is not like him at all, he’s not interested in getting up and begging whilst we eat either, we had some left over Bolognese today which we persuaded him to eat, any advice to get him to eat? Or what he might want to eat???

When you say "recently come back from the vets", how recently & what was done, what medication (if any)?

Well he’s been a few times the last couple weeks and had blood tests, today they’ve done some scans and said he’s having liver troubles it could be hepatitis or something else, but they can’t do anything, just anitbiotics, but his appetite has been deteriorating for the past couple of weeks

    Poor lad.

He will have had an anaesthetic or sedation for the scan?

There's a few thing you can try.... tinned sardines which have a strong smell & might encourage him, cooked chicken is usually a tempter, lightly scrambled eggs (no milk or salt) &, tinned original chappie!

Did the vet give any advice about his diet?

For liver problems the main advise is low protein food.

Usually advice to treat meds wise can be antibiotics, steroids, and lactulose.

The only problem when the liver flares up is usually lack of appetite is the main symptom that can be noted so if your dog is having a flare up. It's likely he won't want to eat. Which is understandable.

If the antibiotics are fine to give on an empty stomach in theory he should gain his appetite when they start to feel better. So don't give up hope.

If he's still struggling to eat and seeming no better, if he's not on a steroid a vet may prescribe this too. It does help.

Lactulose is usually helpful in humans as well as animals to prevent toxins building up and prevent hepatic encephalopathy. Where toxins effect the brain.

Lastly a good liver support can also be given. The one I used was denamarin but there are several on the market. It contains things like milk thistle.

Hepatitis is just basically in laymen terms inflammation of the liver.
