My cat can't recognize her sister after getting spayed

Hello!

I have 3 cats. My two older ones, B and C are very close to each other as I got them both as kittens just two months apart. B is very friendly around other cats while C only likes her sister.

When B was spayed, C suddenly didn’t recognize her. I figured it was just the usual post-vet scent issue, but it’s been a month and C still doesn’t recognize B. C seems depressed, as if she thinks there’s a new cat in the house, and I assume she misses her sister too.

Is this normal? What can I do to help C recognize B again? Someone suggested re-introducing them as if B were a new cat, which I tried, but C doesn’t like new cats, she treats B the same way she treats my third cat (very indifferently).

When my female cat used to go the vets, my male cat, no longer with us, took a few weeks to get close to her again. He would just hiss at her when she came near and she loved cuddling up with him.

If they are related, it isn’t unusual for some sibling cats to grow apart as they mature. It’s sad for your cat C as she doesn’t like other cats so is rather lonely at present.

I would suggest using some pheromone sprays or plug-ins around the house which may help.

Hope with more time, things will go back to how they were.

One of mine always sniffs suspiciously at any of the others which just came back from a vet visit. The dog I had used to do it too. I think some of it is that having been handled at the vets they smell slightly suspect.
