i've been looking to get a dog for a while and have decided to get an estrela. i've gone through looking at several breeds, but this one appeals as it has a low prey drive and a good temperament, its moving in with a cat and will spend alot of its time with a chihauhau / mini jack russell cross. i was looking at a malinois but i was worried about the at and the fact that the 2 dogs would constantly chase each other.the parents of the puppies hvae hip scoeres of 3.3 for the male , the females total is also 6.anyone have experience with the breed and what i should look for in the puppies, thanks.

All I know is they're lovely big dogs. If you contact the breed club they'll be able to tell you what health tests and scores you should ask for in the parents. Make sure they are very well trained and socialised bad behaviour in a dog that size is very dangerous. Make sure the puppies are well socialised preferably raised in the house

thanks all , its the temperament i'm after, can't upset the cat too much, good guard dog for the house as well from what i've read. it'll be well socialised with other dogs and people. it will even be coming to work with me. i'll report back after saturday when i've seen them, now to decide for a boy or a girl, someone said the females are more homely so the girlfriend wants one of those, the jack cross is also female.

i have looked at the leonberger but i think they will be a little too large, i'm also looking to move to a more rural house so a guard dog would also be nice and i think the estrela is meant to be the better at that.

looks like the puppy is on hold, the girlfriend is now unsure about having it at her house when i stay over, she lives in a flat , it does have a yard but she's worried about the toilet training. so i thik it will have to wait 6 months until we mmove in together, i'm over hers around half the week otherwise i'm at mine, she rarely visits me because we have a difference of oppinion on what tidy means. :)

well, puppies back on, went and chose which one this morning going to collect it next saturday. we had the choice of the taller thinner one or more compact one, we went for the compact one as it seemed less mischevious. think i'm going to call him fenrir :)

Congratulations! I bet you're really excited now. Believe me, it will seem like time moves so slowly until you can go and collect him.
