(Moved to its own thread)

Had a bad weekend's worth of nights with my two (and don't get me started on Kay!!)

First, Saturday night, Honey started coughing about 8-9pm, kept it going until about 1. Then, just as I was dosing off again, Milly yipped in her sleep. Went to the shop yesterday for some honey (🍯) and both girls were fine all day.

Then, last night, it was Milly's turn with the coughing - not as often as Honey, but apparently neatly timed to coincide with just when I was dropping off. Every time. It's now 5:10, and she's sound asleep on the couch. No sign of a cough since I gave up and got up at 4:30).

She has an appointment for her Librela injection on Friday, so I'm in two minds whether to phone them today, or wait and see how she is and mention it to them then.

I'm so sorry to read this, what a scary, worrying time for you.I hope Milly is feeling better soon.I think the worrying about them is more exhausting than the lack of sleep.I have to admit that the beautiful picture of her sleeping sweetly made me smile.I recognise it so well,we keep watch over them and they sleep peacefully, bless.Fingers crossed that she picks up quickly. You are both in my thoughts X

How scary, you all must be shattered. I hope she recovers soon!
Thanks. Not sure about Honey and Kaylus, but Milly and I certainly are. I've apologized to downstairs neighbour and explained that she's not well. He was polite about it and said he never heard a thing.

At least its five weeks until your holiday and not five days, that would be a lot worse.
I don't think I could go if it was five days away. 😱

Then again, my dad and bro would team up, get the animals to boarding, shove me in the wheelchair and throw me in the car with "You're going!" 😂

Glad you got some rest eventually.
Hopefully in 5 weeks this will all be forgotten and you can enjoy your holiday.
Thank you. I hope so.

Oh Linz what a traumatic vet visit! For you!

They're just trying to get all the drama out now so that they're fine when you leave in 5 weeks - they WILL be fine :)
Thank you @O2.0 . I do hope so. I'd much rather have it this way than everything going smoothly before I go and I get an emergency call from mum while I'm away. :)

Hopefully it is getting better.
Thanks @rona . That's what I daren't say aloud.

I hope you all get some sleep soon. Loki had KC as a bubba and it was an ordeal I remember.
Thank you. :) me too.

Milly had it when I first got her, but I don't remember her being this bad with it... then again, it was 12 years ago. And she didn't sleep in my bedroom back then.

Thank you. :) She has coughed a few times today (one which was brought on by the excitement of getting her treat dispenser, others by the prospect of walks, some out of the blue), but since she developed this cough, it's always been much, much worse overnight. Tonight will tell.

From what I've read (Blue Cross and other websites), it depends on the actual pathogen that causes it - whether it's viral or bacterial. Swabs can be taken to identify which strain is responsible, and what treatment options are. ABs are also prescribed if KC develops into pneumonia.

Otherwise, and for most, treatment isn't necessary. With Milly's heart murmur, I didn't want to take any chances.

Well "Tonight" told.

And it said she's not getting any better yet. I don't think there's been any let-up at all, all night. I've tried giving her the honey, opened the window, massaged her throat, (which seemed to have eased the coughing fits but did nothing to prevent the next one a minute later), but last night was worse than even Monday night.

Vet said on Monday that if the Pardale doesn't help by tomorrow, then they'll assume it's the heart murmur progressing ans try adding another heart med, but it seems to be a bit quick, given KC can go on for weeks. 😕

I'm so tired I admit I snapped at her. I know it's not her fault, but I can't go on like this for weeks. She can't. It's Eczema Injection Day today, and I dare not give myself it when I can barely think straight.

And yet, once again, as soon as she's on the couch, it settles down significantly.

When T had kennel cough years ago he had,a cough syrup like,we would take. Is Pardale not just paracetamol? Maybe time to give your vet a call and ask about something else?
More like co-codamol - it has codeine in it, the vet said acts as a cough suppressant/anti-inflammatory, although I can't find any evidence of such claims online... And where does it stand in regards to her Gabapentin? Should I be giving her both?(I know, that's something for the vet).

She has her Librela injection tomorrow anyway, and I planned to mention it then, but maybe I do need to phone them today. Or seek a second opinion.

Poor you and poor Milly, having a poorly dog is so upsetting and exhausting isn't it!
I've read about paediatric Benylin being given for KC, could you ask about that?

Tilly has been on pardale (regularly takes paracetamol) and gabapentin at the same time.
I would have thought an actual anti inflammatory would be better but I’ve no experience of this.

I hope you can find something to calm things so you can get some sleep too. I know how difficult it can be.

When you say she settles on the couch is she i your room overnight ? Could it be something environmental? I’m sure Loki had antibiotics for KC.
Yes, both dogs sleep in my bedroom. Kaylus has the run of the living room. :)

That's what I'm thinking - something in the environment is making it much worse (she does still cough in the living room too, but it's not nearly as persistent, or as hacking, or as loud).

Having said that, we've just had a "sleepover" with both Milly and Honey on my bed, and her coughing then was only about as bad as in the living room. So maybe she's either too far away from the window, or too low down overnight. 🤔

Yes, there are definitely cough suppressants you can give dogs, I'd ask about them.
Ugh sorry you're going through this!
Thank you.

Thanks. I haven't stopped giving her the gabapentin - mainly because they never advised me to and it didn't occur to me until yesterday.

The vet did discuss loxicom, but dismissed it she has on her notes that she reacts badly to it. Milly's had it before and been fine, but then once, she was on it and was sick.

Spoke to the vet (or the receptionist, who spoke to the vet). They have asserted that Pardale is the best med given Milly's heart problems.

She also said if it is KC (which I do think it is), it's just a case of letting it run its course and that can take a couple of weeks.

Tomorrow's appointment was with the nurse, but she's made a note on the system for the vet, and they'd want to see her themselves, so we'll see what tomorrow bring,.

01:51. So far, Milly's had 1 single coughing fit.

So why am I still awake?

Because she's on my bed, and when she's not snoring in my ear, she's doing her very best to back-kick me out of bed in her sleep. And if she succeeds, I'll land on top of Honey.

Oh, and she's suddenly decided that if Honey likes honey🍯 , then so does she.

Dogs! 🙄 😁

Definitely KC. Two vets checked her heart and lungs at yesterday's appointment, both say they're still clear, and one (the one we usually see), managed to cause her to cough by irritating her throat.

Plus, no coughing at all last night.

Milly fell again trying to get into the car but this time, managed to get up with my help We'd been waiting 20mins for my mum to come for us, so she'd been standing a while, so possibly pointing to the arthritis? They've put her on another pain med for that, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm beginning to worry about finances for it all. I mentioned - briefly - about seeing if I can do the Librela injections myself and get a prescription - that would save £40 a month, but it's looking like that would go straight back to the vet for amandine.

Vet suggested acupuncture too, but that's waaaaay out of my price range unfortunately. :(

Thanks. I know you're in the same boat. I'm sorry. 🤗 . Expensive but worth it, eh?

In one respect though, it's actually a relief that her leg weakness is caused by pain, rather than natural, old dog muscle wastage, because if it's pain, despite the expense, there's something that can be done about it.

I’m not usually one for advocating credit, but if you are going to spend the money anyway, have a look at the 0% credit cards. Some have long payback periods at the moment.

At least that would put a less urgent strain on your current finances. Just make sure you don’t add more to it, or miss payments.

Thank you @Lurcherlad . :) I have a credit card, but I'll need to use that for decorating the new flat (when I get it 🙄 ).

I'm looking at things in other areas that I can reduce at the moment... £34p/m for SkyQ, for example.

If it helps and she’s on a human dose of amantadine get a prescription and get it at a human pharmacy.

Glad to hear she’s on the mend with the kernel cough.
Thank you. Me too! (but still glad it was "just" that and not her heart). If she gets it after boarding, I'm sending her straight back and they can deal with it. 😉:p

She's on 1.5x50mg per day.

Are you close to renewing? They gave me a deal to keep me and I pay £26 a month.
15th Jan. On the phone to them now. Talking about Black Friday deals.

Ah I think that’s a veterinary only dose so the most expensive.

It may still be cheaper with an online pet pharmacy but you’d have to call up to find out the price, being a human medication they can’t “advertise” it on the websites.
Typical. Thanks anyway. :)
