I was Just wondering why people dont use sand as a substrate for hamsters, it looks nice, and it would be easy to clean cos you could just sift for poo and remove wet bits, and it would be lovely for them to walk on. Is there a reason people dont use sand cos now Im inspired, by the way what sand do you use? My 7 have sand baths (which they adore) but I bet they would love to have all sand.

lol she loves digging in it, and going to the toilet as well right next to the one she is meant to use

I get children's play sand from Argos or The Entertainer, been reading a lot of reptile forum topics about habitat's and it is safe [non toxic] from what I have seen

I know some people say it is too dusty for them but what is the natural habitat of a hamster like?

Just cleaned her out and she has moved the nest straight back :scared:

It would be too dusty for rats or mice as they suffer from respiratory problems but as far as I know hamsters dont have issues with that. Is it harsh on her feet and tummy at all? I was worried about Spikes stump, shes fully healed now but obviously the end where her leg was will be more delicate than if she had a foot still.

She must have such an interesting life, when you compare the poor little hams stuck in starter cages and then you see her luxury abode, cant blame her for doing a bit of remodeling though just so she gets it how she wants it.

What is that cage & where did you get it! It's amazing! My Nellie would LOVE one like that...she's always redecorating for herself too lol. She's in the Rotostak Space Command Centre just now (OH's idea:rolleyes:) & she completely stuffs her long swirly tube with sawdust so she cant even use it anymore! xxx
