I believe they do this on the opposite side of the theme park, away from the animals so as to cause a minimum amount of distress.

I really think that money takes over from anything else now a days, the animals come in 2nd place.

Years ago some kids were terrorising some ponies where I used to go riding.
They were throwing fireworks at them. In their panic one of the ponies fell over and twisted her gut and she had to spend the whole night in agony and terrified before being PTS in the morning.

Fast forward to the next Bonfire night, when the OWNER had a firework display and a huuuuuge bonfire in their other field, literally across the very small road, and for some reason no one thought it was a bad idea. :blink:
WTF!!?
