Hi my miniature yorkie has been diagnosed with a detached ligament. The vet said it was a disease. Ive read on different forums that surgery isnt the best for her. Im scared to make the wrong decision. Any advice would be muchly appreciated xx

Are you talking about the cruciate ligament?

Theyve not really been much help tbh. It took them a week to read her results even tho i rang up every day. Theyve not suggested an alternative but i joined a couple of Yorkie groups on Facebook and a few people have said to get a second opinion. One lady said her yorkies is controlled with tablets. Ive registered he with Vets Trust as the specialist quoted me £3500 which i havent got. My insurance only covers £1000 xx

If your vet isn't being much help, go and see another one as it's impossible for anyone to say whether surgery is needed over the internet. It depends on whether the ligament is ruptured or just torn, as well as a lot of other factors specific to the dog - age, activity level, the effect it's having on the dog etc.

I'm not sure I know of any tablets that can help repair a cruciate. Sometimes small dogs opt for management rather than surgery, but that basically means total crate rest for months, and there's no guarantee it will work. Also, the longer your dog favours the other leg, the more likely it is for that cruciate to go too.

Talk to another vet and see what their opinion is. Yes, cruciate repairs are expensive but I'm afraid that large unanticipated bills are part of pet ownership.
