I've come home from work to notice that Io is bloated.

She isn't acting differently, still nipping and playing etc.

Should I just keep an eye on her for now? I've had guinea pigs in the past with bloat so I am aware how serious it can be.

If you believe that Io has bloat then I would contact your vet immediately.

Get the peg ready for some smelly trumps.

Blade would often have bloaty days when he was fed on dry food. He'd look pot bellied almost like he was going to pop.

Keep an eye on her but probably just wind

It went fine, as I thought it might. She did her temperature, which was normal, checked her heart rate, listen to her tum, all fine, she is bloated but isn't too bad the vet said.

Shes in her cage at the moment asleep and obviously just to keep any eye on her and the bloat should be gone by the morning - if not, obv phone the vets

Glad you took her to the vets and all seems fine - can never take any chances with bloated dogs.

When was she last wormed and what with?

Ah ok - just wondered as worms can give a pot-bellied bloated appearance :)

Out of curiosity - how is her name pronounced? Exactly as it's written?

Just keep an eye on her, as my girl was checked over by the Vet & the symptons carried on so I took her back & it was confirmed bloat, 2 hrs later she was being operated on as it was starting to twist. Thankfully all turned out well & she made a full recovery.

The main symptom for my Heidi was vomiting clear throthy fluid every 10 min or so.

Thank you, she did vomit on the way home but that is because she gets car sickness, she then did a nice big poo when she got outside in the garden.

It's part of the latin name for the peacock butterfly - and I think there was an Io in Greek mythology.

    Hope Io's OK.

If you truly think its bloat then I would speak to the vet, bloat can lead to gastric tortion where the stomach twists on its axis, which without vet intervention can be fatal.

Her stomach will be hard distended and tight like a drumskin, there may be worrying at the stomach, or she wont like it being touched, they also tend to do a lot of stretching, and have arched backs, or stand roached back with possible spayed legs. Trying to vomit and not bringing anything ups another sign. Check her gum colour often with bloat the gums will be pale or whiteish. They also have a slow capillary refill a lot of the time too you can test it, by pushing on the outside of the upper gum with a forefinger, it should blanche in colour where you pushed and return to normal in 1/2 seconds. Some will drool a lot too. Some will be unsettled and pace, where others may be lethargic and not want to move.

If shes showing any of these signs particularly if several, then I would speak to your vet.

Shes currently shown none of those signs, her gums are a healthy colour and she has no issues with me touching her tummy.
