When we first introduced our new rescue dog to our long established cat, she made a noise we had never heard her make before - a strange growling sound, accompanied by inflation. :)

To begin with we kept the dog outside on the terrace and the cat would sits for hours just watching him, through the patio door. Presumably she was studying him to see where his weak points were, ready for the quick kill. It took several months of this studying before she was comfortable with him and within about 6 months they were friends, chasing each other, sniffing each other and so on. Didn't stop her from swiping him from time to time so he knew who the boss was. :D

So I think the best advice is make sure the cat can study the dog from a safe place, until the cat has worked out how to kill him and she has slapped him into submission.
