Hi all I’m new to this forum so bare with me!
I have a 3 and a half year old girl who we have mated for the first time.
(She’s had all health checks and relevant jabs beforehand. As did the proven champion stud.)
She has been A.i’ed 3 times but think she caught on the last mating.
We thought she was 5 weeks this Monday but the scanner (a mobile one we found online.) said he could only see a singleton and she was around 3 and a half weeks. I’ll upload some photos of my girl aswell. Can this scan be wrong ?? As she would only be day 25 when she had the scan. Any help would be appreciated x

Counting from the date of the first mating, how far would she be now?

If you have calculated 5 weeks, then she cannot be only three and a half weeks.

I would ask your Vet to scan her.

Thankyou for replying - she would be 5 weeks from the first mating. The last mating she had was the 11th of jan. which I think would take her to being 3 and a half weeks??? The person who scanned her said he would come back next week and scan for free (he scanned another dog whilst we were there and that dog was 5 weeks and had 5+ which we could see). But a professional sheep scanner and dog scanner has said he doesn’t seem very professional and she will scan my girl. Also someone has said her nipples and belly look bigger than one pup. Ahhh confusedddd !!!

So, were there two matings ten days apart?

She was ai’ed on the 2, 5 and 7th of jan and then the stud got to her and they tied on the 11th jan! Her season started 22nd dec and she didn’t stop bleeding until the 21st jan. so confused !!!!!

Unfortunately, this is what happens when mating is not properly controlled.

The correct way is two matings, two days apart. That way, you have a very good idea when your bitch is due.

When matings become a free for all, you are going to be confused.

Normally, you would calculate 63 days from the date of the first mating, but, if your bitch was mated 4 times, it's anybody's guess.

I'm not judging, I'm explaining why it is now difficult to determine when your bitch is due.

If you trust whoever did the scan and they are clear she is three and a half weeks gestation, then it is likely she conceived to a later mating.

    It may be possible.

I really would have her scanned again, to try and get a clearer picture.

Thankyou , I just feel really silly now.

Ok so in hindsight say - if she conceived to a later mating and only 3 and a half weeks, would the scan showing a singleton be inaccurate or could there be more possibily?

Sometimes, a scan showing a singleton pup can be inaccurate if others are hidden away behind the ribs, for instance.

Normally, bitches will conceive to their first mating. However, the fact that your bitch was apparently receptive for ten days confuses the issue.

It is possible that, when she was mated the first time, she was only coming into her receptive period, which makes it possible she conceived to a later mating.

The whole picture is very muddied. At this point, it is purely guesswork as to when she conceived.

Having said that, at whatever point she did conceive, it wouldn't affect the result of a scan.

If the scan is showing only one pup at this time, you would assume there is only one pup. A singleton is not unusual in an early mating, but that would mean she is five weeks along and not three and a half.

I really would ask your Vet to scan her at this point.

Are scans really that accurate on time scale. I have never had a bitch scanned but have had cows who have been 2 or 3 months out on the timing.

Sorry I know this is an old post... my bitch was scanned by the vet, he saw 1, possibly 2 pups, she had 6!

How many did your bitch have in the end?
