...because I just keep breaking them :Arghh

Yesterday morning Maude woke up with a slightly swollen face which dramatically inflated over the course of less than an hour. Of course I found a massive slab fracture to one of her carnassials which was at least a couple of days old but newly infected :(
So into surgery I go with one of my own bloody dogs for the second bloody time in a month. The offending tooth is now gone and her face is far less swollen.

I've omitted face-hole pics because I'm nice like that but please see before and after pics.
Maudes post surgery sad face were so dramatic that I had a constant lump in my throat every time I looked at her all day.
I am so upset that I didn't know about the fracture to the tooth before it became infected :Sorry

Aw don't beat yourself up! Unless she was being funny about food or other symptoms, how would you have known? Plus those things can get infected pretty fast.

Poor Maude, poor you! Fast, uneventful healing vibing your way :)

She was literally still offering full, hard grips at 5pm the night before on tug toys when we were training and there is no way it wasn't broken then :Banghead
She is hard as nails, that dog. Nails I tell you.

Thanks for the healing vibes. After a crap night with her last night where she tripped balls, saw stars and required constant cuddles, she has been absolutely normal today.

    Her right now.

Her yesterday being cuddled by my (and her!) favourite colleague...

She's put on some weight again since yesterday. It's astonishing how rapidly she looses condition just through stress and pain. My poor lamb :(

Poor Maude & you. Don’t beat yourself up, if she was playing tug there’s no way you’d know she had a fractured tooth. Glad she’s feeling much better & putting that weight back on.

Oh Maude! That face! RSPCA face if there ever was one.
If it's not one of them it's the other. Nothing you could have done about the tooth as she obviously didn't notice herself until she swelled up!

    Aww bless her!

She looks very sorry for herself :(

I’m sure she’ll bounce back fast now the offending tooth is gone and the abs do their stuff.

Not sure how you would have known if she gave no signs, so don’t beat yourself up ;)

I doubt many of us give our dogs a thorough daily top to toe examination ;)

Oh the poor poppet, and yes agree with all the it's not your fault sentiments, you can't be checking their teeth every day for fractures and chips, it's just sadly one of those things, just a good job you have a handy vet practise and staff discount :D

Poor Maude! Her face is a rival for Sara’s in the “call the RSPCA” stakes.

Sara had the same a couple of years ago. Eating, even kibble, playing, tugging, defluffing toys. All with a chip to a back tooth and a nasty abscess brewing that eventually burst through the front of her gum. The only sign was lip smacking/chattering and awful breath but we had her checked by a vet and he said it wasn’t her teeth based on her still being “normal”.

Dogs. Aging us prematurely since I don’t know when...

aww poor girl. Hope she's feeling better now (even though she was apparently feeling ok before!LOL:D).

Hannah is a member of this club too! I took her to the vets several times with a small wound on her face that wouldnt heal. They finally decided to knock her out and stitch it and discovered it was actually caused by a tooth abcess. I dont remember her being overly bothered about it either!

Don't beat yourself up! They're ridiculously brave at times. Freddie completely ripped a nail out a few weeks ago - just a little hole there now :Vomit.
It was a total bloodbath and he didn't even yelp, just tried to carry on playing fetch! :Yuck

Hope she's feeling better today :)

Ouch! That looks painful. Easy to recognise after the infection set in but not before.
