Tut tut, all these people on here using treats to train - you obviously don't have a good bond with your dogs and show them love and respect either ;)

@Dogloverlou please don't grass me into Crufts for training with treats - I'll never be allowed back. I absolutely will NOT be shovelling treats down her face before we go in the ring and pretending I have the world's biggest sausage in my pocket! :Shifty

I’ve had some great advice here, some lovely support and I’ve made a few really good friends that, even though I only “see” them on FB, I count them as genuine friends.

Things can get heated, but that’s just people for you and I’ve found it easier over time to ignore those conversations where I know that my input just won’t change anything. Sometimes I have to wade in just so that somebody searching and stumbling across a thread has a balanced response.

I’m a member of a few FB groups, but the only dog ones are ones I run myself for my local area and one for reactive dogs...although I participate in that one a lot less now because of how big it’s got!

Are you a member of the canine enrichment group? I'm pretty sure I saw fidget on there not long ago, something about an electrical check? Sorry that sounds really stalker ish and I'll be embarrassed now if that wasn't you lol

Just read the first page of this and will read the rest later. When I started doing obedience with Holly someone said to me that it didn't appeal to them at all as he wanted training to be fun for his dog and didn't like the idea of dogs being like robots. Well if anyone watched me doing obedience training with Holly they would see that a. she loves it and it is fun for her and b. she is definitely no robot, particularly when the scent cloths come out and she squeals with excitement!

Yes! That was me! A BT engineer had to come in so me and Fidget had to hide out in the bedroom. All of my enrichment prep and what did he do? Slept. All afternoon

Much as I’d love a robot version of Holly for my very own...she’s no robot :) It’s obvious she does things because she loves it, not because she has to or is forced to.

My neighbours border collie had only been trained in the basics. When I started doing trick training with him it made him so happy. He just couldn't get enough of it. Felt sorry when he moved away and he went back to his few basics again :(

I think I leave a fb group daily, only to join another one and find that yup, 90% of the dog owning population are living in the dark ages. Most recent
"Thanks to whoever recommended shaking a bottle of stones at my dog when they were having a crazy five minutes, she's petrified of them and now won't come out of her bed, lots of peace for me" .

There seems to be so much misunderstanding of training, why do people think it has to be boring or punishing?! A previous member here used to make comments about 'robot dogs' especially when it came to clicker training. An obedient dog isn't a dog with no personality at all, I think it shows a complete misunderstanding of how training should be & how relationships can be created & strengthened through learning together.

My young GSD lives for training, he loves it ... all of it whether it be tracking, obedience or protection work (we train in IPO). Even if we are doing more technical work that requires him to think a lot about his positions, etc he still enjoys it & it is still fun, we wouldn't do it if it wasn't.

Exactly. You only have to see how excited Holly gets when I pick up her stuff for training to know that she loves it. If your dog finds it boring then you're doing it wrong as far as I'm concerned!

I’m gonna be honest.. some days I’d prefer a lot less personality and a little more robot :Shifty;)

Robot dog working, clearly being forced into it.

Sadly, due to being over-trained, robot dog has a very sad life and has no idea how to be a dog...

Please save robot dog from this life of abuse.
