I am 64, I have 'A' level English and 'A' level ICT. The Job Centre has told me that I have to go on a course to learn basic English and basic ICT. Are they serious?

Sadly, they probably are serious. What's the point of obtaining such qualifications one might ask. They're at A level standard for goodness sake! I'm stumped.
Maybe it's due to those types that obtain fake qualifications, I don't know. I'm still stumped.

The old terminology for IT... C stood for communication. In the very young pre internet you would talk about ways to communicate through technology such as phones that sort of thing. Obviously now it's all computers, software, hardware etc and of course the internet

My guess is that the course is a prerequisite for other training. I worked for Jobcentre Plus for many years( for my sins ).

UK spells it centre, rather then the US center. Tomato, tomayto!

Probably its coz of your age. Maybe they are worried you will go into a job interview and not understand textspeak or how the yoof of today talk!LOL:Hilarious

I knew that, hence the smilies - it was an attempt at a joke ;)

I started schooling with British spelling, switched halfway through to American spelling, plus I'm a polyglot. I can't spell anything. The only reason my posts are legible is because of spellcheck. :D

I can see they might want you to ''brush up'' your IT as it advances so rapidly and you need to keep on top of it; but I would be offended if I was asked to do an English course. As @Forester suggested, it's probably just more or less a formality. Anyway, how are your cats these days?? Sure it was you who had a kindle of lovely ginger kittens not that long ago?

Im with you on the spelling though....Im terrible. I always end up Googling a ton of stuff too, like polyglot for example....Im barely a singlyglot!:Hilarious

and @alan g a Id be peeved about the english too, although I get the ICT. Things do change rapidly in that dept!

Agreed. But the one thing you don't know and they don't know, and that is by choice, I am always using ICT and make sure I up to scratch.

did they give you any sort of test to ascertain you needed them?

My guess it's just done as a default as there are more and more people who leave school without basic understanding of IT or a grasp of the English language :(

I have an English degree, yet in my first job after leaving uni, they made me do a basic English test before allowing me to enrol on the NVQ course they wanted me to take. I guess it's a one-size-fits-all rule.

Share your pain... I can’t get a job in my profession because I have no GCSE!!!
I have NARIC certificates for everything else as those are equivalent qualifications but in Europe most countries have no such exams as GCSE, got angry and just went and passed English a year ago.

It is completely ridiculous... obviously private sector doesn’t care... still had to pass entry English and Maths...
But seeing the level of written English or simple mental maths of some uni graduates... can’t blame my company at all!!!

Probably you can pass those exams with no effort at all.
