I was told that you need to be the leader of your dog, but how do you do this?

You don't need to be the pack leader dogs do not expect their humans to act as dogs. You need to train him using positive reinforcement to follow your commands.

I became the leader by democratic process. The dogs never really got it together to put up a credible alternative and I took it by a landslide (1 vote to nothing).

(Mind you, I threw biscuits on the lawn just before the polls opened and I think the low-turnout helped)

A controversial topic at the moment...

Depends on the dogs that you have. a puppy, a traumatised rescue dog, a guarding/dominant breed?

Depending on the situation, would depend on the answer I gave.
