Hi, my cat has just today given birth to 3 healthy full term kittens who are all feeding well, however she also gave birth to a fourth kitten who appeared rather premature. It was smaller with shorter limbs, no hair at all and red/purple skin. It was born in the sack with a mess of placenta attatched. It seemed to wriggle for a minute or two but then passed away. I'm wondering if this kitten was just under developed or whether it could be from a second litter? She escaped out the front door at about 3 weeks pregnant which is why i am wondering this. It does feel like there are possibly still kittens in her belly. Any help would be much appreciated. I have called the vet but he can't come tonight and i dont want to move her and the kittens yet to take them to the surgery as they are only a few hours old. He has told me things to look out for the could be warning signs of a problem but at the moment she is very content and happily feeding her babies. She is no longer contracting or pushing or showing any other signs of being in labour still. I'm still so very worried though so any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

It sounds rather as though this kitten didn't develop properly for one reason or another. I've no first hand knowledge of breding so will tag @lymorelynn in the hope that she, or another breeder will see this and advise.

There are sometimes stillborn kittens or neonatal deaths where kittens are underdeveloped but I'm not sure that it is connected to a second mating. I doubt that your girl would have been receptive to a male 3 weeks into a pregnancy.
Kittens can be born several hours, even a day, apart so you will need to keep a watch on her in case there are more kittens. If she is content and taking care of her babies I wouldn't worry about taking her to the vet.

Thank you both so much for your replies, it sounds more likely that it was an under developed kitten then. I'm keeping a close eye on her and will do throughout the night but they are all very content for now :)

Please be sure to not let her out again until she is spayed. She might go into heat and can get pregnant very soon after giving birth.
