A friend of mine says that Alsatian and GSD are seperate breeds. I think that they are alternate names for the same breed. Who is right?

One and the same, the term "alsatian" has now been dropped from the KC standard I believe.

All came about when during/after WW2 when people wanted nothing to do with anything German I was told :)

You are right....although I believe the name 'Alsation' is now no longer a recognised name.

Why? You don't expect him to take our word for it, do you? There was a member on here last year who said he had a gsd/alsatian cross! Wouldn't have it they were the same breed.:

I think your question has already been answered... but an owner did amuse me on a walk last year ...

I saw this lovely alsation and said to the owner... his one of the most lovely alsations I have ever seen :D and in reply, I was told... I think you mean German shepherd

If there was a brick wall in close proximatey I would have head but it...

It was about as daft as me saying staffy aand getting corrected that it was a stafforshire bull terrier

Well, perhaps he was one of the ones that thinks a gsd is a different breed.

Possibly like most shepherd owners he hates to hear them called by the wrong name. They have not been called alsatians for the last 30 years at least - I think I would have corrected you too.

Some people don't like their dogs to be called Alsatians, my friend feels quite insulted by it when people call her sheps alsatians. She says it's insulting to the true breed an will correct anyone who calls them by it, it's a sin name to her :D

it is still a word with a meaning but it is incorrect to use it in relation to a current dog. I can remember having this discussion with my aunt who swore blind that they were different breeds about the time my sister got her first GSD or shepherd, whichever you like calling them and I think that was probably over 30 years ago.

Didn't mean to offened anyone. It was just a simple question. I am 55 and when I had my first GSD they breed was always called Altatian, but times change and we all should change with them.

teehee I was like that when I had my first malamute, now I just smile and say thankyou when Im complimented on what a lovely "husky/akita/snow dog" I have :D

This is my OHs first malamute tho and it is so funny to see him baulk at people and lose his patience with "She is NOT a husky!!" :nono:

Im hoping he gets used to it soon, otherwise he'll pop a vein in his forehead or something
