I just got a large hutch off of freecycle but i'm a bit worried...

The guy who gave me it said that the previous occupents were a couple of guinea pigs...
They died about 3 months ago from mange...
Will it be safe to use this hutch? Is it possible that it could spread to new occupents??

I will of course be giving it a very thorough clean and a general tidy up as its a bit tatty but after a good sand down and the mesh replacing it would be fine to use, but not if it will spread mange..

    What do you think?

my understanding of mange is that it lives under the skin, but i imagine like fleas they can lay dormant for a awhile?
might be worth contacting ur vets and asking if they do any shampoo or sprays for cages/dog beds etc, or you could just treat with jeys fluid

a good cure for mange (better then the vet stuff) is flower of sulpher, its a yellow powder, you can buy it online, might be worth getting some if that to clean it with aswell, just mix it with some water for the hutch, its better in vegetable oil for animals but i dont think youll want oil in your hutch

If I were you I would get some Virkonx and give it a good clean out with that to be on the safe side.
Virkon kils most things so you should be fine with that.
