Wondering if anyone had any advice... Ive never had any problems with guinea pigs eyes, more in bunnies, and the vets can't seem to throw much light on it..

My skinny pig has had a sticky eye for a few months now. At fist he'd just close his eye a little as though something was irritating his eye (I could see nothing in there) and then some white goo started accumulating around the eye. His eye also looked a little more recessive than his other eye, which was clear and fine. And I know with skinnies you have to be ultra careful about them getting things in their eyes (having no eyelashes n all..). :(

He went to the vets and we were given some eye drops as he suspected it was conjunctive eyetus. However two weeks later and it's not any better, still oozy, then goes crusty. Back at the vets he said it could be to do with blocked tearducts and has referred us to see an eye specialist at another vets next week.

However yesterday I noticed his "good eye" was quite swollen and very red under the rim of the eye lids, almost blood shot like. There was also a blue / white tinge to the eyeball - almost what you get when an animal has cataract. Theres no oozyness as with the other eye..

He off to see the specialist next week but Im really worried now - has anyone got any info or advice as to what it might be..?:

I will try to take a pic to post....

thanks so much Amey (and Rupert)
  2. Aww I wish I could help, but my first thoughts was what the vet said :frown:

Maybe once you upload a picture, people will be able to help more.

    Hope he's ok x

Get your vet to check under the eyelids... it might be cysts. If it is, the only thing that can be done is to remove them surgically.
