Hi everyone! I am new to the forum. I'm Amy, and i'm married with a 10 year old son.
We have decided to re-home a dog from our local rescue centre, and he is coming to live with us on tuesday!!! His name is Dougal, and he is a crossbreed, of which actual breeds i am unsure! He is 12-18 months, and sadly he has suffered some abuse, and flinches when you move suddenly. I am hoping to get some tips and general advice from all you dog owners out there!!!:)

Hi Amy! Well done for adopting! This may sound a little strange, but one of the best ways to intro a nervous dog into your home is to first of all make sure all the the current 'pack' are present, all have offerings of a tiny treat in their hand (but don't offer them unless dog voluntarily comes to sniff), but the hardest thing of all - ignore the dog! Sounds odd, I know, but the natural thing to do is stare and watch, and offer affection, all of which can seem pretty aggressive from a dogs point of view. So give him a little time to check out his new home and pack without pressure, and when he come to any of you, offer a treat and a stroke, but dont look directly at him for a while. Just the first hour or so will make all the difference and give him confidence.
Having said that my BC took 14 days to say hello to my partner LOL! Now theys bessie m8s!
Good luck and enjoy those walkies!!!
