I have all my university work on this drive and it won't boot up and I need it. It's not being recognised by the computer at all. I have checked for loose connections and there is none. It was working last night but now it's not. Is there anyway I can boot it up just to get the files off so I can format it?

try booting in safe mode. option given when you first boot up tells you what button to press to open in that

you should always save your uni stuff to hd AND stick drive or something... i learnt that the hard way too!

I am actually amazing :D I worked out how to fix it :D

Because it gets unplugged all the time, the pins had worn loose and I couldn't find my soldering iron, so I used tin foil to bridge the gap and hey presto I am on my computer, and I have my essay, and I have got to finish it :/

Be careful doing that...you could short your comp.

Buy a new HD...hook your old one up as a slave and you can get all the info off of it.
If it's your sata/pata cable (the flat wire connecting to it) that is worn, buy a new one of those. You can get each relatively cheap.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, HDTV, Electronics and Cameras!

If you have the hd password protected (log on) remove it before you do this.
You can still get the info if you don;t, but you have the extra trouble of going through and taking ownership of the files first.

    This ^^^

I shorted my Mobo by simply taking out a USB stick and then re-inserting it too fast.

Cost me £180 in parts to fix.

    :(

This one is still an old IDE drive. I plan on putting XP on a new one I have but I have to get his essay finished first and then thats the plan of action!
