So since yesterday our seven month old male has started holding onto my hair and sniffing and rubbing it. Today he's began biting and licking it, placing strands where he wants them.

It's not really a bother, I've just never encountered it with any of my previous cats and wondered if anyone has any ideas about it?

Hi, some cats do like to sniff and lick their human's hair. Human hair has a very strong scent to our cats, so it attracts them to mix their own scent with ours. Basically your kitten is 'grooming' you.

If you have long hair tie it back in a ponytail and he may be less interested in 'grooming' you. And perhaps change your shampoo to one with a different scent, it may deter him a bit.

Has your kitten been neutered yet btw ? If not, his behaviour could be related to sexual maturity. i.e. he could be grooming you as he might groom an (entire) female cat.

He is neutered. I use a pretty neutral smelling shampoo, I could give something with citrus in it a try.

Yes, the citrus smell may put him off. :) .

You could maybe try distracting him when he starts by offering him a strong smelling cat nip toy - if he responds to cat nip? Otherwise he might respond to valerian-smelling toys.

The Yeowww toys contain strong-smelling cat nip:

    Or these contain valerian:

He's been very gentle and he's quite responsive when I say no. I'll try distraction too anyway.

I've had cats lick my neck and face before, but styling my hair is new.
