We help train them for the 1st year, teaching basic commands sit, down, stay, stand, socialise them, get them used to stopping at kerbs, walking in a straight line until told to turn left or right, find the doors and crossings. It is great to see how quick they learn, the onlt bad point is after they are a year old they go into Forfar training centre to finish their training,so we have to say good bye ,then start all over again with another pup.
On the plus side we always know where they are and get an update on their progress every 6wks.

Thank You all so much for your welcome.
I love doing this,it is so hard when they leave you,but you always know where they are and depending on who they are placed with, some do keep in touch which is really nice.
Plus like you said Carol you know they are making such a difference to someones life and that in it's self makes you feel good, and just to have played a small part in the end result.
If for any reason they have to be withdrawn and do not make it,they may get offered to another service,or the original walker can have them back, same when they retire if that person or family member cannot keep them, then again believe it or not the original walker get offered them back.

    Hi Ruth,
You sound as if you have a great job, but how do you let them go.

It is very hard,i still have the odd moment when i think of Heather.
You get the chance of another pup the week before the older one leaves to go in to training,or the same day or a week after.I chose the week after and had a good old cry,you never forget them, a piece of your heart goes with them.
I felt so bad i had to do a tribute video of Heather and some of the other Guide Dogs i have boarded,as yes i board too.So when i wanted to remember the joy they give i just look at the videos and smile and cry and smile...
I have put a few pics on the forum and also a link to the videos i made:)
