I was looking for some advice on what I need to do to prevent my new dog getting fleas. Any general advice and product advice would be great.

If he was to get fleas would it be obvious?

    thanks very much

There's quite a few products out there that treat fleas. Some such as Frontline and Advocate you have to get from your vet, others you can get from a pet shop, and there are also natural methods such as Billy No Mates and feeding garlic.

Personally I use Advocate as it treats most worms too, and supplement it with Billy No Mates.

I'm not sure how noticeable fleas are - I guess it depends on what colour your dog is, what sort of coat they have and how infested they are. I think you'd probably notice them when grooming though.
