Recently acquired a cat. I have not had cats before and so know very little about them. Casting about on the internet has confused me as there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice. Hoping to gain knowledge and advice here.

Welcome! Having a cat isn't complicated. Make sure the litter box is always clean, make sure there is always fresh food and water, feed a high quality diet. Make sure there are no hazards in the home for the cat. Try not to let your cat outside especially if you are in the city. Keep your cat well groomed. Get lots of toys. Put on videos of birds and stuff from youtube for the cat. Always be kind to the cat and speak in a soft voice.

It's also important to get a scratching post and always show the cat the scratching post and rub her paw on it when she scratches something she's not supposed to. If your cat decides that your leather arm chair is a scratching post, that chair will not last very long.
