Hi guys, so I’m not a novice to a whelping bitch but I am unfamiliar with my bitches circumstances. She seemed to have started stage 1 late last night, just with a bit of panting and nesting but then she went to sleep fine. She woke up this morning, had three bites of breakfast and then was sick so I’ve just been giving her water today as it seemed something was starting with again panting and restless, with some tremors. Then again a couple of hours later she seems normal.
From my experience when the bitch starts it’s usually consistent from there. This seems a very slow build up.
Jackapoo bitch, 5 years old, first litter. Any advice?

It sounds as though she may be getting a few early twinges or just feeling uncomfortable, which could cause her to pant and dig.

Has she eaten since she vomited this morning?

she was sick from breakfast, all of it, and then when I felt she’d calmed this afternoon I tried her with some food and she was sick again about half of it but she’s not showing much signs other than that. No panting now, just slight tremors and general withdrawal. She’s drinking a bit of water though at least.

Loss of appetite and, sometimes, vomiting can be signs that labour is imminent.

All sounds normal to me at this point, but it would seem she's not far off now.

thank you, that’s reassuring. With my other litters it seemed much more definite beginning and very quick first strange or less noticeable twinges.
ill keep you updated. Appreciate your time.
