Was shocked to see how many windfarms have sprung up around here over the last year. Northumberland and the Scottish Borders really are blighted by them :( .

It was an excellent day! Over 100 brace so not too huge a bag, but perfect for easing back into the season. Also, my main picking up dog is out of action for another few weeks so I'm glad it wasn't too hectic!

Many more blue hare than the last few years; there were several courses  .

My best girl is back to work at last! 6.5 weeks after having pups - she's been dying to get out doing what she was born to do :). The last few weeks picking up without her just haven't been the same.

She gained a spontaneous round of applause from two guns and their loaders after watching her work the moor yesterday - she uses the wind like a pointer, she's spectacular to watch!

My special little dog :) .

    There's always a special one isn't there?

It's great when others notice it too, but the main pleasure is just being out with a dog like that

That's exactly it, Rona :) . Just working with her is enough to make me so proud. I've really missed her these last few months; she really is my dog of a lifetime.

Getting busy now that the season's underway!

One of the older dogs is in season so the youngster was drafted in, a bit earlier than I had planned (!).

15 months old and her first day on the moor last week:

Not quite sure what to make of the distant grouse drives, unlike a certain rocket:

Youngster had her first partridge day today - was very careful lest her braincell was blown, but she was a lovely steady girl, off lead permanently by lunchtime, and picked a couple of nice blinds during heavy drives without losing her head.

So pleased with her that I probably will take her along to a trial training day tomorrow and swap her in at lunchtime to see how she does in a walked up situation. Exciting times bringing young ones on!

    Hi Eve!

So glad to hear Bramble is doing better!

Thanks for the lovely comments - just upgraded my phone and I'm loving the camera!

Took both dogs for the training day today but ended up leaving youngster in the car as the ground was just too difficult for her inexperience. D ran so well today, I just couldn't believe it, wasn't expecting that at all considering how many birds she picked yesterday. She was awarded guns' choice for the day - proud mother moment!

Was my last day on the grouse this year yesterday, but it's been a great season so far. The youngster has come on so well, couldn't have hoped for better considering her age :) :

Beautiful views on a beautiful day:

My most special girl gained her stud book number on Saturday, and amongst a very strong field too. Couldn't be more proud of her :) .

Well, since my main picking up dog decided to fracture her dew claw at the trial last weekend and is now out of action , I had to swap my big commercial day to go picking up on our small farm syndicate shoot.

Decided to take the youngster out on her first solo outing...and she was a little star :) (unexpected after the tribulations of Thursday's training session!). Picked some lovely birds, never went off the whistle, and finished the day with a strong runner mid drive.

Coiled and ready, watching other dogs pick during the first drive:

Shockingly steady while watching a hare race past after blanking in some cover crop:

Blowing her brain cell having to pick up next to a pen:

Haha thanks, Rona, but I'm not sure how steady she would've been had she seen it while we were still blanking in! She's seen blues at a distance on the moors but this was a big test for her. As luck would have it I was faffing with my phone, looked up to see what she was so fixated on, and a hare came whizzing past within a foot of us - I could have reached out and touched it!

Fabulous pictures and they sound like great dogs. Definitely my type of Labrador!
