Its probably been 6mths now that the dogs have been vegan and I have to say they are doing really well!
I never set out to turn them totally vegan, my original plan was to reduce their animal product consumption as much as possible whilst still keeping them happy and healthy...it just happened that they seem to be happy and healthy on no meat at all!
So if anyone is interested in their diet.... The general recipe for their meals is 50%protein, 25%starchy carbs, 25% veggies (unlike people whose requirements is more like 50%veggies, 25%carbs, 25% protein). Also dogs benefit from some extra fat in their diet too.
My lot have half vegan dog kibble, as I know its made to be nutritionally complete then half home made.
Home made is; 50% protein (beans, chickpeas, lentils, tofu, etc), 25%carbs (brown rice, cous cous, sometimes ww pasta or potatoes), 25%veggies( mixed frozen veg, sweet potato, always a big portion of broccoli, kale or spinach for added iron). Then I add a dollop of peanut butter coz extra fat, plus...yum!, nutritional yeast (B12) and milled flaxseed (omega3).
All this is mashed to death to aid digestion. The dogs absolutely love it and when I was transitioning over they usually ignored the meaty part of their dinner to scoff the home made stuff first!
I do keep vegan wet food in foil trays in for emergencies but they aren't as keen on that.
Treats tend to be raw veggies/fruit, vegan dog biscuits (or if I'm feeling domestic I make my own!), also sweet potato chews. Giving up meaty chews/treats wasn't a big problem for my lot because they argued over anything long lasting so I had to stop giving them anyways.
So that's my vegan doggies in a nutshell!:Woot
(oh, and if anybody wonders they do lovely solid poops too!).
