On Wednesday Dougal woke up at 4:30am literally screaming. I have never heard anything like it. He had a back operation 5 years ago and has had problems which have been medically managed ever since - but nothing like this. I tried to comfort him, and for the first time in nearly 11 years he bit me really hard.

Took him to the vet - because he was being aggressive, the vet tried to put a muzzle on him but neither him or I could do it, he was so distressed.

Vet tried to sedate him with oral sedatives but he still wasn't able to treat him. He told me I could take him home sedated without any treatment or PTS. He was clearly in such pain and distressed I decided on the latter. I am completely broken now and all I can think about was that I should have tried to get him home and get another opinion.

Best friend anyone can ever have. RIP Dougal. I am in bits.

I don't know how people manage - I miss my dog so much and feel so guilty. I am living in my bedroom at the moment. Can't face the living room and the garden where Dougal was always there. It's so hard - made worse by living alone during a lockdown. I did walk my neighbours dog which helped a bit. I think I am already changing my mind about waiting a while before looking at another dog; House is so empty - he was here with me since I moved in 10 years ago.

It's so hard when we say Good-bye to furry friends and the pain never really goes away, we just learn to live with it. Try and remember all the happy times you shared with him, take each day as it comes be kind to yourself it will get easier.

Awww it is so very hard to accept so soon. I’m in the same position. I had to make a decision on specialist or let her go without really knowing what was wrong. She couldn’t eat properly and breathing wasn’t good. My family didn’t support my decision to go to a specialist even though I managed to get referred and get an app for the same day. I was scared if I was wrong to send her to a specialist in case it was bad news and I put her through a day of tests etc. She hated going in the car and with breathing not normal it was just more stressful. I didn’t know what to do. Although she was losing weight , due to not eating anywhere near what she usually did, she was still her happy little self going about things as usual. Her favourite thing was being fussed! She was like my shadow, following me everywhere! Miss her so much. I do have my other cat, who’s nearly 9 and 2 children and my other half, but it still seems empty so I can’t imagine how you're feeling being on your own, especially with the lock down. it does sound like your Douglas was in a lot of pain though so if the vet couldn’t control this, you did the absolute right thing - you couldn’t have left him in such pain. that doesn’t make things easier though as afterwards you start to wonder what you could’ve done. When time is of the essence, you do what you can to help them. So, so hard though. We are here if you need to chat.

    It will, just takes time.
I find it gets worse again before it gets better.

Absolutely. A week tomorrow for me and still feeling the same regret. When I look back, I can’t understand why on earth I didn’t do things differently.
You were helping Dougal in the only way you could. It’s never easy. X
