Hi, if anyone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated!

My dog Bailey is a 12 year old Jack Russell with no previous health conditions except an ear infection.

I've been to 2 different vets and they've said my dog (Bailey) blood tests have come back fine and she just has an eye and ear infection. I questioned if she could have allergies and they said no. She is currently taking antibiotics, ear drops and eye drops. They have also tested her eyes and cant find any scratches or issues.

Initial symptoms which started last week:
    • Shaking
    • Unresponsive
    • Panting
    • Couldn't settle or lay down properly
    • Struggling to open eyes
    • Lethargic
    • Drinking/eating less
    Symptoms this week:
    • Still struggling to open eyes and squinting
    • Cracked nose
    • Cracked paws
    • Dry skin
    • Congested runny nose
    • Mucus in eyes
    • Lethargic
    • Sleeping ALL day
    • Drinking/eating less
Any advice or suggestions on what could be wrong with her would be a big help!

    Thank you

    Becca

If you suspect an allergy, can you ask them if you can try an antihistamine? If it works, you would know.

What does the vet think it could be. If they are not taking it seriously and he is really that bad I would change vets pronto - like make an emergency appointment with a vet on Monday

Both vets have just said that she is an old dog and has an eye infection. She has so many symptoms now and is not acting herself at all! She is usually very playful and excitable but now all of sudden she doesn't want to get up.

I've taken her to two completely different vets and neither seemed to be too worried about her

Could she have burned her paws walking on hot pavements this week?

I’m surprised the vets aren’t concerned - she looks very poorly to me.

Maybe a painkiller and antihistamine would help?

She has barely been out for the last two weeks and when I have managed to get her to go for a short walk we've been on grass, so it can't be a burn.

Her nose/lips are also cracked. Her skin in general is very flaky right now. I'll attach a photo from last week showing how sore her mouth was. The second vet did say he found some ulcers in her mouth too. She has never had any problems in the past with dry/cracked skin this has all just happened at once

Thanks for everyone's replies so far by the way

Initially we were worried she was dying but there's no discoloration to her gums and even though she is eating less she is still eating. Also her bowel movements are normal. I really don't know what's wrong with her and hate to see her in pain!

Were the two vets from the same practice. You cannot leave a dog that is as ill as your description.

    Very strange symptoms.

It does sound as though she's in pain.

I can only agree with others. She's clearly very ill and needs help. If your Vet is still casual about it, I would insist on a referral.

Sorry to not be of more help, but I have owned PRTs/JRTs for forty years and haven't seen symptoms such as these.

What were they looking for in her blood panel?

Feet... hyperkeratosis perhaps? This also affects the nose. Not sure if this fits with what you and your girl are experiencing but might be worth querying. Please keep us updated with any progress at the vets

What a difficult situation.I agree with Rafa,I would perdue a referral to a specialist vet.I haven't encountered these kind of symptoms but my dog was seen by an orthopedic specialist. The care he received was second to none and I wouldn't hesitate to have any dog referred for anything that warranted it.I would consider a situation that had the vets baffled to warrant it.If you say what area you're in,someone on here may have experience of somewhere in your area, although your own vets should be able to advise you.

It doesn't sound like allergies in my opinion. Is it just the skin on her nose and paws that's cracked? Or has she got flakey dry skin all over?

Have you tried massaging some paw butter or coconut oil into the pads to see if that helps?

Warm cotton ball over the eye to help remove gunk? Don't know if it'll help though.

Have you tried tempting her with wet food? You can warm it up a bit to make it more smelly and enticing. Also will help with water intake.

She looks poorly bless her. Please keep us updated

The adult version of canine herpes can cause eye infections as well as affecting other body systems, maybe run a test for that. It would be unusual for it to be so severe in an adult though.

    Thanks for all the help!

    Update:

Her face swelled up on Sunday night and she was itching like crazy. Took her to the vets first thing on Monday and they said that they think she has allergies. Even though I questioned that last week with the other vet and they said it definitely wasn't allergies! They have given her a steroid injection and told me to go back in two weeks. We still don't know exactly where the allergies stem from, she's been on the same food since she was a pup and we haven't changed any household products.

Her skin is very red, dry and flaky at the moment, so I'm hoping that will relieve her itch. Going to try and get some kind of paw/nose balm in the mean time. She also has started to really smell (I realise that all dogs have some kind of doggy smell) but it's not going even after I bath her! They said it could be a yeast infection maybe. Any suggestions on sensitive/natural products that could help her skin and her odour??

I've continued with the eye drops and her eyes have definitely improved.

I also stopped her antibiotics that she was prescribed by the other vet, I looked into what they had given her online and the antibiotics were actually for dental issues, despite her having no issues with her teeth... Since the antibiotics have left her system she has been much better in herself. The vet said she could have had a reaction to the antibiotics.

Hoping she continues to improve over the next few days!

Update on Bailey, she's made a miraculous recovery! (photo attached) Still not entirely sure what was wrong with her but just so happy she has recovered IMG-20200831-WA0000.jpg

    Excellent news!

    Thanks for the update. :)

So glad she’s back to normal - she did look very poorly and unhappy before.

Shame not to know the cause but at least it was short lived.

Hope it was a one off.
