Believe me I've tried!! Sumo is too small, Cooper is too old, Cromwell has a blood disorder, Tiz is too aggressive (vet scared of her ) and Sidney isn't the type of character they would use (drama queen, scream if you so much as tap him!!) So as much as I'd love to provide this service I can't...then again my 'possible' new addition might be a candidate. ;)

Not for the want of trying then :D

I just think that one day Luika may be in need of a transfusion, and its always nice to give back. I'm pretty sure that he would be ideal since he seems to quite enjoy meeting all the other dogs at the vet :)

My can't because the whippets are not big enough Zoe the setter is too daft she wouldn't keep stilllong enough and the greyhounds Button hates going to the vets and William can't as he has 2 many problems since his RTA. I was asked at crufts that year if I would consider it I did but he had the accident before I had chance to register him now I can not get weight on him so he isn't allowed as he's not in A1 condition

Might be a silly question but if a poodle was to give blood does that mean they get their fur shaved? I did read into it but I think Cheeko is too old plus I don't think he would let a vet near him. If fur didn't have to be shaved then I'd consider it when puppy was older.

When we were at crufts and they asked about William they said yes they would have to shave them. Thats why I wasn't to sure about it with William because of showing him with a shaved leg. That was 2 years ago so it may have changed now.

I never knew dogs could give blood! The rules seem quite strict on which dogs can/can't give blood, I suppose it means that only the best blood types are donated and that the dogs are all healthy enough to go ahead with it :)

Yes, your dog must be healthy :)

Hope this thread has spurred some of you on to putting your dog forward as a donor. Just think, it may be your dog in need of a transfusion one day ;):)

I would love to, but mine are just far to small, shame really as they have lovely temperaments so probably wouldn't mind.

Great thread for raising awareness Nina:)

Does anyone know if dogs can donate in Ireland? Would love to know as I donate blood, so there's no reason why Monty shouldn't too!

Yeah, I noticed that there was a northern irish site for it. Poor monty hates the car though. I'd feel bad putting him through a big car journey & then have him bled dry & drive back again!! Talk about torture!!lol
