my question is - do you let strangers pet your dog?

i use to in the past let people pet my GSD Zara, she loved getting attention from children :)

however as she became mature she became more aloof with strangers outside and wasn't that bothered with getting petted, she didn't seem to enjoy it unless it was kids - she lived to give them kisses.

so whenever a kid asked to pet her i would say yes.

however one day i was walking her down the street and 2 boys asked to pet her, i said yes.
they put out their hand to pet her, but then they pulled it away and started screaming and ran away! :eek:ut:
luckily enough Zara never reacted - so ever since then i don’t let anybody i don’t know touch her - what if she had reacted to stupidity - she would be in trouble.

as a result she is even more aloof with strangers and she basically ignored them.

she loves getting attention from welcomes visitors who are nice to her though!

I think some people think i am being ignorant if they ask to pet her and i say no.

If they ask yes its good for socialisation. It does get annoying when people ask to pet Max when he's working and in the vest that asks them not to.

I don't let strangers touch my dog if he's on a lead because he can not back away if he wants to and he may try to protect me. If he's off lead, and he's asking attention, then I say yes, but he has the option to back away if he wants to, so less likely to react.

The gundogs and Chester yes! They love it and are so friendly!
Bess it varies. It depends on the person. If it is young kids i usually say go slowly and gently dont go above her head and if she backs away leave her. With adults i bring her up to their level and she doesn't mind at all, even wags her tail sometimes :D

Yes they like being fussed and they also do meet & greets to promote greyhound adoption so are happy being doted on by strangers. Hector likes everyone but Throp can be a bit more reserved with some people and will just move out the way if he's not happy. I'm more cautious with children as some will try and hug the dogs head or are loud & silly which can worry Throp, but most are fairly sensible.

i let them if the dogs let them, but i make sure the people are dog polite and give them the hand to sniff first, then if the dogs want them to pet them they can.

My last dog (a gsd) used to ignore adults totally when they petted him but I still said yes as it wasn't hurting him, he adored kids though and liked them to pet him. Henrick loves attention and I let everyone pet him, under supervision obviously.

I let people and children pet both of mine.... i sometimes give the kids a treat to feed to the dogs. Its nice for the dogs to get some positive attention from strangers. I always make mine sit before they get approuched just incase they decide to jump up lol

I had once a group of kids running full speed screaming their throats out towards my dogs while on lead which scared me alot as i got spooked and luckily the dogs stayed calmer than me lol they asked then if they can pet the dogs and it was all fine.... :D

lol...I don't get a chance to decide. Since Sammy is still young he is so nosey that anyone we come across when out walking he has to go over to and get petted!! :D

I don't usually get much choice. Chance will cross the road to great someone for a moment of attention! If I ever leave her outside a shop it is rare if I return and find her alone. she has normally got the attention of someone!

As has previously been said, I do prefer people to ask especially if she is sat down nice and calm outside a cafe for example.

i feel like im being very ignorant now lol
but i still wont let some random person pet my dog - unless i have a very good feeling about it and Zaras body language is nice and relaxed :)

mine is a cocker spaniel, he's never gone for anyone and is incredibly friendly, but i wouldn't want to risk any accidents occurring.

If the person asks, yes. Dave Loves people. He Loves attention! He can't stand still, his tail whips himself and his bum waggles so much he is practically bending in half! Lol

I usually get little girls ''Does your dog bite, can we stroke him?'' (I always want to ask why on earth would I bring a dog who bit into busy town)

But I HATE when I am walking along the pavement trying to get Dave to walk to heel and random peole make clicky/kissy noises at him. Oh it makes me MAD!

I was once walking my foster rotti and some ned kids asked if they could play with him, I said ''No he hates neds'' at which point the dog noticed one of the guys had a glass (he hated them) and started growling. Needless to say they all scarpered! Lol :D

i had a similar experience yesterday - but instead i said no, because at the time we were doing some OB training - the kids were a great distraction - especaily when they were making meaw noises.

the same group of little girls always ask me if my dog will eat their cat!
the little girls obviously love their little cat - it sits next to them as they play.

zara would chase the cat if it ran - but i keep her on a long line, so i have full control. i train her a lot their as i think its a great distraction for OB. her leave comand is getting a lot better to, especially when their is a cat in the distance :)

Absolutely no petting allowed. Mabel is wary of strangers and hates to have her head petted by strangers. She will bark if surprised. When someone asks I will always encourage them to give her a treat and then they can pet her. She's a treat whore :D
