I am having so much trouble getting to sleep at the moment. My brain just won't shut off what with worrying about the wedding, my OH's redundancy, Christmas, etc. Please help! Do you have any tips on getting to sleep? :p

Alcohol helps lol Failing that, a relaxing hot bath before I go to bed helps me sometimes. I am an insomniac and tried many things, none seem to work for long.

What a coincidence. I had the same night nurse as you. She knocked me out because I refused to take my Nytol.

Try some hot milk an hour before bed-time. As an Insomniac the most basic thing would get under my skin and keep me awake all night. Years ago I tried Nytol, but developed a high dependancy on it and became addicted. I often find reading at bedtime helps as it pre-occupies your mind and is a good distraction from your current problems.

Other than that I would suggest visiting the doctors. My guess would be that they would prescribe a short term drug in Zopiclone.

I do hope your sleeping pattern improves as no sleep is not nice at all.

When I went to the GP,he wouldnt prescribe me zopiclone. He said he only usually gives it to people that work nights:confused:
But he did advise nytol instead:)

A short course of sleeping pills for a week normally gets me back on tracks. Do not make the bed the enemy. If you can't sleep, do not toss and turn but get up and make yourself a glass of warm milk, relax and read a book (don't watch TV, it is not restful) until you feel sleepy.

i've got horrible insomnia, always have done and honestly the only thing that's helped me is smoking weed.. i shouldn't recommend that, though!
make sure all electrical things are off, not on standby in your bedroom.
only use your bedroom for sleeping, try to avoid doing anything else - if you read/watch tv, don't do it in bed.
hot milk and hot baths, and don't bother going to bed unless you're actually tired. try to stay warm, too. meditation can work but i'd recommend reading up on it thoroughly first.

I find deep, regular breaths, and concentrating on listening to my breathing and heartbeat works well, or doing the same but concentrating on some relaxing music turned down low. The concentrating stops me listening to the thoughts in my head

Even that didn't work for me!

I've had horrible insomnia most of my life. My mum had me to the doctors with it when I was about 8 years old and I still suffer with it now. Docs have given me sleeping tablets but even they haven't really helped. Oh I sleep when I take one but can't take them every night long term so I do a short course then back to insomnia, another short course, back to insomnia and so on.

lol oh dear! it's not an ideal way of dealing with it even if it does work, as you end up smoking it every night just to be able to sleep and then it makes the insomnia worse when you don't. i've recently stopped for a bit and i'm sleeping about 3 hours a night at the moment.. which is actually really good for a sober me.

Thanks everyone- some ideas to try!

For those that suggested sex, thanks, haha, but we already 'indulge' at least once a night, poor OH just wants some sleep! :ihih: I'm back to manic-brain mode pretty soon after anyway. :(

I might try some nytol, what's in it?
