I got offered a job at Pets at Home last week, so I handed in my notice at Ikea.

HOWEVER, Ikea how now told me that they don't want to loose me so will increase my contract hours to match/beat Pets at Home. I don't know what to do!!

PaH is £6ph + £1 when training is completed.
Ikea is £6.50 + 30p when training is completed.

PaH is 16 hours + overtime (told me would be about 20 hours)
Ikea is 20 hours + overtime (around 30 hours over Easter and Summer Hols)

    WHAT TO DO?!

    Ikea pros and cons

    Pros
    Know the people
    Know the work
    Guaranteed 20 hours +
    Won’t need to buy shoes
    Slightly shorter walk
Hear bad things about Pets at Home - had 2 full time, 1 part time and 1 weekend position available... why?
No risk of bringing home unwanted animals
Won't need to deal will sick. dead animals

    Cons
    Don’t find it interesting
No fluffy bunnies, chinchillas, degus, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs.
Uniform isn’t nice and doesn’t fit
    Won’t need to buy shoes
    Smaller pay increase with training
Would need to tell them I’m leaving
    Evening shifts are annoying
Won't be able to learn about animal nutrition and fish communities
Pets at Home discount more useful

    PLEASE help me to decide
I've got until my shift at Ikea at 4.30 to make up my mind.

Honestly..... in this current climate i would stay where you are im guessing you have passed any probation they set when you start? If so then they will up your hours with chance of overtime and your job will be safe.
Im very wary of new employers as they seem to class new employees as disposable objects so me personally id stay where i was safe.

It's good that Ikea are desperate to keep you, speaks alot about what they think of you.

But only you know if you would rather sell farmed animals or furniture that falls apart

Seriously though go with your heart, only you can decide.

    Good luck :D

(It would be good though for P@H to have a staff member who knows what they are talking about  )

Do you want something that will become more of a career or do you just want a job that'll bring in the bucks but you can forget about it when you go home.

If it's the first one then which company would you prefer that 'career' to be with & what sort of chances for advancement do you have?

If you just want a job then go for the one that will give you the most bucks in your pocket and will cause you the least stress.

Only you know what you need and would prefer but if you would be happy enough to stay at IKEA then I think you should, mainly for the stability in a very unstable workplace at the moment.

P@H is a corporate, you get to be around animals, but you don't learn that much about them, you sell them to mostly irresponsible people that have no clue about how to care for them properly, the client comes first, the animals come from animal farms (no matter how small the farm is, if they sell animals coming from breeders that don't want to know where they pet go to or get an update from the owner, not being able to collect important information about the line, its a farm).

If I was you, I would stay at Ikea, in the end you will be paid much more and do more hours and you won't be cleaning up poop and sick from animals kept in tanks too small for them. Or have to be a witness to animals being euthanized just because they are too old to be sold...

I would stay with IKEA because you do more hours.

But maybe if you are bored can you not see if there are new skills/training that they company offer?? maybe even look at changing depts or moving up the ladder??

Do you have alot of contact with people at Ikea?

How are your people skills as with P and H you will be around children, animals both odd to work with:D,

Jumps are scary go with what you feel is right not what the gang say on here,, after all you could be the one who changes all the bad things the members think of p and h..

life only goes round once,, do what you want to do to enjoy the ride.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'm gonna stick with Ikea.

I really do like the people there, and I know that I've got a fab manager.

I know I need to make up my own mind, but I like listening to other people advice, like staying where I am because of the current climate. If it turns out that p@h is awful, gonna be really hard to get somewhere else.

I am studying for an MSc too, so really don't want to hassle of retraining in something else.

    THANK YOU ALL.

Like other members i would stay put.

    1. The economy, your job is obviously secure.
    2. You wont have to work a probationary period.
3.You already know the people there
    4. Its less stress.

If you are keen to work with animals what about some voluntary work, they are crying out for volunteers in our area.
