My dog had pups 5 days ago and since I've noticed she's digging at the kitchen and bathroom floors, she's never done this before. Can anyone tell me why she would do this and give me some advice please.

Not sure but could it be to do with pain. Maybe to do with uterus contracting. Mine panted for 9 days after having her litter.

This is only a stab in the dark....I am no expert!!!

It's probably helping her womb to contract - IME - it's not unusual for bitches to dig intermittently for a while after whelping.

Having said all that, if you are concerned about her, then I would speak to the vet.

Did you have your girl checked over by the Vet after whelping? If her temp is normal....shes eating....drinking.....no foul smelling discharge and pups are doing well then its likely to be nothing to worry about but personally.....if I have the slightest doubt of my bitchs health or wellbeing....I will get the Vet to check her over.....even if its just to put my mind at rest.

I read recently, pretty sure it was in the Book of the Bitch that digging before whelping used to be regarded as the dogs way of preparing a nest but they now believe it to be a dogs way of coping with mild to moderate pain. I assume dogs experience afterpains like us humans due to the uterus contracting which it does for some time after birth, this would then explain the digging. I am though no expert so if it continues or gets worse themn I would contact your vet .
