A couple of days ago,(04/08/09) I put Peanut (Top Eared Black Berkie Rex) in with Boyrat (Dumbo Husky). They have mated so I'm hoping for babies! This will be the test to see if Boyrat is infertile (I mated him with one of my other girls some time ago but there were no babies. The rat ended up having a phantom pregnancy, as some of you may remember.)

I will be recording weights over the days and I thought it might be interesting to post them.

Expected due date will be between the 25/08/09 and 29/08/09.

Her first weigh in was on Thursday and she was mated on Tuesday.
I've looked up rat pregnancy weight gain rates and the average for the first few days appears to be aboiut 5g per day.
Weighing is also a good way to tell because I can track any major weight loss, which if she does often is a sign that she is reabsorbing the litter.

I will also be comparing her weight to her sister, Sammy, who is about the same size just to see if there is any big noticable weight gains (This'll probably be the most obvious way of telling as by the end of week one, there shoule be a good ounce or 2 of difference between them (28g-57g)

If she does have babies, I will be selling them when they're old enough so PM me if you;re interested :)

    Peace

    Great idea :D

I can't wait to see some pups. Hopefully Boyrat isn't infertile :)

I think i'll make a topic simular to this about my recent gerbil pairing :)

Go for it, we can follow eachothers :p

How long is a gerbils gestation period?

It's usually around 25 days but can be a bit earlier or later :)

This is an excellent idea, approaching it from an analytical point of view. It's cool that you are weighing them.

Peanut tipped the scales at 22g today, though I'm not sure if I was just being optimistic as she was wriggling round LOADS. I'll reweigh her later, along with Sammy.

    Peace
